September

The first Saturday of September, we visited the Bristol Renaissance Faire again, this time with Alex's friend Ben and his family. The two of them enjoyed running around and climbing all over things. On Sunday, it was off to my Aunt JoAnn's for a barbecue, where Alex met his second-cousin Alex. They played with the bean bags and ladder toss. By late afternoon, he was out cold and ready for the ride home.

Once again, a picture of Alex in his favorite spot. Home early from work one day, I thought I'd teach him to pour his own drinks. He did pretty well, all things considered! He's also got a rocking chair for quiet reading time.

Mid-September, we picked up some miniature furniture from IKEA. Alex helped assemble it -- his favorite tool at the moment is the screwdriver. Once it was all done, he found the table and chairs to be the perfect height for his a crayon masterpiece. A few days later, our neighbors came over to make pizza. The ball pit got some use, too.

Last Weekend of August

A few pictures from my birthday weekend: Alex smiling away, enjoying dinner with a friend, building with waffle blocks and Uncle Greg, riding his creation around the kitchen, the repairs after the collision, and the new recumbent design. Later on, Aunt Mindy and Uncle Joe read him books while he tried to slither away. Perhaps next year he'll be more help in blowing out the candles. Not unexpectedly, he preferred salty crackers to the sweet cake.

Sunday morning, Granny showed him how to drive the tractor (it's as old as me!). His favorite button was the horn. One last group shot, then it was time for a few laps around the yard.

From August

Alex enjoys the swings at the local park. He's fascinated with the buckles on anything -- swings, car seats, high chairs. We got more pictures the next weekend, smiling and drinking as he swung away. After that, it was off to the other playground equipment. Both Alex and Mommy enjoyed the slides.

He was quite proud of himself when he figured out how to get into the laundry basket without flipping it over.

Who says beer isn't educational? Here, he prepares for a future job stocking the cooler at the local grocery store. He can also build vertical displays.

Snack time in the toddler room at his old day care.

More mileage from old toys. Believe it or not, he wanted to climb in, and was perfectly happy for the next ten minutes.

When it's time for a walk, he lets us know by 1) attempting to open the door and/or 2) bringing shoes to us. This time, it was the park again.

Mid-August or so, he learned to climb on the dining room chair. Mommy's laptop is one of his favorite (and forbidden, supposedly) toys.

We went to visit Ben (friend from day care) at his house, shown here with his older brother. They played in the sand for the afternoon, then sat down for dinner.

In Muscatine the next weekend, Alex empties the fruit bowl, then refills it with Grandpa Jim. Here, he shows us how he can grab his own foot while sitting in a chair. Granny Susan found a coloring book and taught him how to color on it (and the table, and his hands, and ....). Outside, he started his golfing (or caddying, perhaps) career. No interest in the balls, but he's quite happy swinging around the clubs.

That Friday, we visited Niabi Zoo. We saw more animals there than at both Brookfield Zoo trips combined! The baboons were howling at us before we even made it through the gate. Alex was mostly quiet for the train ride. The tunnel was a bit spooky (and dark, save for the occasional flash). Afterwards, a family picture in front of the engine, then a quick elephant ride.

The petting zoo? Well, Alex loved the baby cow, and the baby goats just loved everybody -- especially when Grandpa Jim started feeding them! We braved the bird cage, and loved the close-up views (my hat survived, unblemished!). By the time we hit the giraffe pen, some people were getting very sleepy. Random fact: some animals sleep standing up. There were three lions basking in the sun, but none of them moved so much as a foot for us.

Near the merry-go-round, we found an out-of-order ride that nevertheless gave us a great photo. The carousel was a new experience, but he caught on quickly. Then, a few final monkey pictures and it was off to the buffet for lunch.

(57 pictures in one post!)

From July

Other pictures from July:

Alex calling in a pizza from the basement phone.

Playing with his new hammer and peg set. Exploring the tool kit, also from Toys R Us. Surprisingly, he didn't mind sharing (some of) his tools. Even Michele liked them.

Who'd have thought a flattened picnic table would be a dance platform?

Mid-July, Alex got a ride in his bike trailer. He's also rediscovered a few of his old toys in the basement, including the bouncy chair. He can get in and out of it himself now. So far, it's held up to his abuse.

This booster seat makes a nice chair on the floor.

One weekend, we went to the Bristol Renaissance Faire. Michele found some jewelery, and Alex discovered Sky Chairs. He wore his hat most of the day and enjoyed playing with mine.

This Blog Isn't Dead Yet....

Finally, another nap, and nothing else I have to do! (Well, mowing the lawn will be done once the sun goes down a bit.)

To set the record straight, after a few weeks of the day bed in July, we got tired of finding Alex on the floor and put the side back on. 'Round the end of August, after another weekend of him sleeping on the floor in Muscatine, we tried converting to a day bed again. This time, it worked. Alex quickly adapted his regular bedtime ritual -- bath, diaper/clothes, bottle, and brush teeth, then he climbs into bed and waves good-bye (though I suspect the wave actually means "go away"!). We then shut the door and walk away for an hour or two (opening the door later, when we go to bed). This works at least 90% of the time, and we're quite happy with it.

In the morning around 6:30-7:00 or so, he grunts & mumbles for a half-hour or so, and if we don't pick him up soon enough he stumbles down the hallway to our bed, finds us, and laughs hysterically. Again, this is quite acceptable to us, compared to crying at 3 AM!

Pictures From the Past (Well, early July anyway)

For the Fourth of July weekend, we took a trip to visit the grandparents in Muscatine. While there, Alex was given a lawn mower. He loved turning the key and pushing it around. (I'm hoping he's still got this much energy when he's old enough to reach the real one!) In keeping with the lawn care theme, he got to sit on (but not drive!) the riding mower before raking and hoeing the mulch around the flowers.

He also got his very own basketball hoop complete with Nerf ball. His favorite move? Dunking the ball, then trying to find it. He also found one of my old toys, a 6-wheel car/bus/van, and a cedar rocking chair out on the porch. Wagon rides turned out to be pretty good, despite the uncertain start. I have no idea what this hand signal means, but both Alex & Granny are doing it.

Sleeping was a bit more interesting on this trip. He would only scream when put into the crib. Eventually I got tired of this, and put him on the floor (with a blanket). Oddly enough, he was perfectly happy. So, every time he slept (naps & bedtime), we put him on the floor next to our bed and slept just fine.

Once back home, I took a few last pictures of him in the crib, then ripped the side off. After reviewing the instructions, we added a few new pieces and a day bed was born. Here, he points out the carvings he made while teething. After adding a new step to the bed, it's ready for use.

Hmm, Alex is awake again. Gotta run....

First Day At New Day Care

Today was Alex's first day at his new day care. Michele dropped him off a bit before nap time and let him sleep there. All reports are positive -- he didn't cry at drop-off and was quite happy playing with the other kids. I found him out on the playground around 3:30, happy as can be. Success!

Pictures on Hold Indefinitely

No, no more pictures posted yet. It's on the list, behind cooking, eating, cleaning, picking up more books at the library, watering the garden, and of course feeding, bathing, and cleaning up after the little monster. I'm beginning to fear the search party we sent out two weeks ago has been lost and will never return with the "more time" we requested.

June Pictures

Last day of the month -- finally, time to catch up on pictures!

Back around the first weekend of June, Alex was feeling pretty goofy. We don't know why he does this -- perhaps sometimes he's just in the mood to be a bit weird. Don't worry -- by the next weekend, his head had straightened out and he was smiling as usual. He got plenty of exercise pushing and driving his car in circles around the sun room.

Aunt Mindy & Uncle Joe stopped by on their way home from a Cubs game. They dropped off some clothes and toys. Mindy found out that red wagons don't have brakes. The car seems to be his favorite outdoor toy at the moment. Usually, he drives, but sometimes he pushes. Golf clubs? He'll be practicing with these for a while yet.

The Friday before Father's Day, they threw us a party at day care. We learned he likes small pretzels; he learned to drink root beer through a straw. Saturday, he slept in. Later on, our neighbor had her new septic truck out front. Alex enjoyed the view and knew just what to do with the steering wheel. Looks happy, eh? Probably ought to start with something a bit smaller, perhaps a lawn mower. Before bed, he rode the "mommy ride".

After breakfast last Saturday, we took him to the local splash park (aka sprayground). He loved trying to catch and deflect the water and was in complete awe when it shot straight up out of the ground.

By Monday evening, he had a cough and was wheezing a bit, so we took him to the doctor. Turns out he's got pneumonia! Three days of antibiotics left, but otherwise he seems to be taking it quite well. We're hoping it wasn't due to the water play, but it's hard to say.

Michele's Birthday/Memorial Day Weekend

The following weekend, Uncle Mike & Aunt Helene were in Chicago for a few hours. We met up at Brookfield Zoo. Alex got to eat his snack at a picnic table (in my lap) and was quite content to be pushed around in his stroller. We saw a lot more animals this time, including some huge camels and bison. This completed our visit with Michele's family -- we'd seen everybody within two weekends!

On Sunday, Alex had a colorful meal, then checked on our lilac bushes while waiting for us to take him to the park. He loves the swing, and hasn't tired of it yet (we've always tired of pushing him first!). Occasionally, we swing in pairs. He also climbs around the play equipment at the park. He seems to have no fear of heights (nor concept of railings!) so we have to keep a tight hold on him. He wasn't sure about the slides at first, but we hear he loves the slide at day care.

That afternoon, Grandpa Jim & Granny Susan made a quick stop to check on him. We rigged up the Little Tikes swing Mindy had found at a yardsale in the front tree, but it just wasn't a very good fit for that tree. We're still searching for a good spot to hang it. For dinner, we packed the grill with chicken and corn. Alex got to try corn-on-the-cob, and decided he enjoys gnawing at it.

For breakfast Monday? A bottle of milk, of course, followed by some Cheerios and applesauce. His spoon skills are improving rapidly.

The next weekend (30-31 May) we found a great deal on a bike trailer at a yard sale. Alex has ridden in it once so far, and seemed to enjoy his first (admittedly short) trip around the neighborhood. Perhaps one of these evenings he'll get another chance!

Toronto (Days 3 & 4)

Going back to Toronto:

After the dinner at the Pearl Harbor restaurant (still day 2, actually), Alex needed to wash his hands. So he did -- in the pool in the plaza atrium. Mommy was amused.

On Sunday, we had lunch in Chinatown. Alex demanded we pass him around the table to keep him quiet (here, it's Jo-Anne's turn). Back at the hotel before dinner, he chose Daphne. After dinner, we browsed a local mall. Grandpa Joe carried him through this store.

On Monday, it was back to the airport. Michele's parents dropped us off (thanks again!). The US terminal was pretty quiet, as usual. Alex thought it was one big playground. He was fascinated by the moving sidewalk but ultimately wanted to explore everything. Seen here is a rare shot of Alex with a still-on-his-head hat. Finally back at Ohare, we waited for the parking shuttle to pick us up.

Rome Wasn't Built In a Day...

... but our garden was! After thinking about it for a year (or two), I bought the boards yesterday. This morning, I laid it all out, leveled the boards, bolted them together, and filled it with dirt. This afternoon, I bought some plants from Home Depot (some were even on Michele's list!) and planted them. Hopefully I'll get the fencing up before the rabbits come. How does Alex fit into this? He was outside playing in the dirt as I planted. He really enjoyed dragging the cultivator (small hand-tool) back & forth in the dirt, at a safe distance from the new plants. He tried dragging the rake around, but it was just too big.

Now, to catch up on those pictures....

First Day in Toddler Room

Today was Alex's first day in the toddler room at day care. He was a bit cranky at first (probably sleepy because he was up at 6 AM this morning) but was just fine after a 10-minute mid-morning nap. When I showed up at 4 PM, the kids were all standing by the door in their coats waiting to go play outside. (It started pouring as I took him to the car, so I doubt they were out long if at all!) I didn't hear of any trouble with the toddler-level sink (which he'd discovered & learned to operate even before his first full day). Overall, a great success.

Pictures from the past two weeks will be posted as soon as I get a few bills paid. Priorities, ya know....

Short Update

Alex weighed in at 26 pounds earlier this week. My parents stopped by to visit over the weekend. The lawn needs mowed again. The remaining pictures from Toronto, as well as last weekend, will be posted as soon as I can find time!

Toronto (Days 1 & 2)

Last Friday, we flew to Toronto to visit Michele's family. Alex enjoyed seeing Ohare again. Riding in the stroller? Naw, look closer -- he's actually pushing it. Once we got on the plane, Michele tried to eat her lunch. Somebody else had other plans.

When we got to Ottawa, Phong braved traffic (thank you!) to pick us up. Alex & Michele had a bit of a fight over his bottle -- Alex won as you can see.

Then it was time to go out for dinner. After Alex put his shoes on (with a little help), he brought me mine. Back at the hotel after dinner, we all had a drink and went to bed.

On Saturday, Alex took some time to explore the vast hotel lobby (especially compared to that room!) before heading across the street to Phong's to play with the Wii (again). Alex thought the controller was a cordless phone and somehow called Natalie to go out for lunch.

Back at the hotel again, Alex tried to decipher the label of some facial lotion, but got frustrated and tried to escape before his nap.

Dinner happened after an exciting car ride to the harbor. Grandma Sharon proved quite adept at entertaining an otherwise-bored Alex halfway through the meal. A spoon, or for that matter anything that fits into his mouth, can be helpful as well. Eventually, he was hungry again, so Grandpa Joe got to hold him as he found and devoured a few more bits of food. Uncle Adrian and Daphne got to meet Alex for the first time. Here's the group at dinner (except for Daphne, who was behind the camera!).

Brookfield Zoo

On Mother's Day, we woke up, had breakfast (as if Alex would ever miss a meal!), and went to the zoo. He took his usual seat in the van. While there, we saw a brown bear and three polar bears. We also climbed around on their playground equipment (which, it turns out, is very similar to our neighborhood park) and saw lots of seagulls, Canadian geese, various smaller birds, and a few squirrels. After eating a quick lunch, Alex decided it was time to head home for a nap and pushed his stroller back to the car. (OK, maybe not the entire way, but definitely more than half.)

Thankfully, we bought a family membership, so we can go back another weekend and see a few more animals (hopefully more than four!).

Weeks Behind

Alright, time to catch up on pictures before the weekend. Here's ol' smiley, probably just fed. He likes taking "money" out of his piggy bank and putting it back in. Sometimes he worries about the economy (just kidding -- I'm sure he's far more worried about his next meal!).

Alex has been spending some time outside since the weather's been warmer lately (until this week anyway!). He likes pushing it as well as riding it around in circles. He doesn't like it when it falls over, or when somebody else tries to steal it.

He's really getting into books. When he's in the mood, he'll even go find a book when we ask for one. Sometimes, he reads to us.

Wet & Lazy Weekend

For Easter weekend, my parents & Mindy drove over to visit. The weather was great, so we went outside for a walk to the park. He went down the slide once or twice, but seemed to have more fun just climbing around the equipment. Then it got cold, so we went home. Here's Grandpa Jim with Alex.

Back inside, Alex tried to sneak up the stairs (as he occasionally does) when we weren't looking. Alex discovered that Cheerios come in convenient, portable, dumpable(!) travel packs. Aunt Mindy (and the rest of us, too) taught Alex to ride and push his car in circles around the sunroom. Here he is chewing on a musical toy.

Ever wonder why I wear always wear sunglasses outside? Wonder no more. A few days later, he was still pushing that car around the sunroom. He does this whenever it's warm enough we can open the door!

A colorful meal of fruit & veggies last weekend.

Yesterday, Alex took another walk to the park. He walked most of the way himself. Being his first time in shorts, he also scraped his knees a bit -- pretty minor (you can barely see it in the next photo), and it didn't bother him one bit. He loved the swing -- much better than his first time, when he started screaming before we'd even finished strapping him in. Back inside, he ran around the kitchen with some of his puzzle pieces before returning to his musical farm animal toy.

Today, we went to the Kohler Children's Museum in Glenview. It's quite a place -- room after room of toys (some of the educational) and nothing off-limits. He loved 1) pushing all the buttons and 2) the water park. Next time, we'll take a camera. (Oops.)

Spring Pictures

Back when it was warmer ('round mid-March!) we took Alex out to the backyard swing. He must've been tired.

Then it got cold again, so he was forced to play with his indoor toys like the animal puzzle pieces and rocking horse (in motion) a bit longer. He moves fast now, sometimes charging the camera. This makes it very hard to get a picture of him upright, but sometimes I can catch him.

It's easy to catch him eating, however -- he always seems to be doing that! We've learned he likes chicken, whether canned, in pieces, or still on the bone (he really enjoyed gnawing on the leg). Crackers are still his favorite, of course.

Bronchitis and More Snow

A week and a half ago (18 March) we took Alex in to the doctor because he'd been coughing for a few days. Turns out it was bronchitis. After a few days of antibiotics and nebulizer treatments (inhaler of some sort) he was back to his normal self.

Spring is apparently suspended this weekend, buried under three to six inches of heavy, wet snow (depending on where in the driveway I measured). We're hoping it melts fast.

Fourteen More From Late February/Early March

Back at home, Alex is learning to stack blocks. He was up to about three at the time of this picture but can now do at least four or five when he wants to. The Little People car set is great -- we can't tell if he likes climbing on it or chewing on the people more.

His favorite walker, aside from whatever's closest, is a laundry basket. Yesterday, I noticed he'd learned to pull it backwards multiple steps to get out of a narrow place! He has more toys than he knows what to do with, and sometimes seems dazed when trying to decide which to pick up next.

He likes the toy piano (2nd pic) but is becoming interested in just about anything that will make noise.

Uncle Michael stopped by two weekends ago on his way to the Twin Cities and built a few things for Alex to knock down.

I can't wait till Alex is old enough to do his [and my! :-P ] laundry....

Back upstairs, we keep his tugboat set (which is plenty of fun even without being in the bath tub) and one of several Elmo toys. And finally, here he is peeking out of a closet.

That's it -- we're finally completely caught up on pictures. Now, to reload the camera and start over!

First Birthday (Part III)

Yes, it took a month to get these pictures uploaded. Finally, time to sit at the computer without Alex on my lap trying to rearrange the pictures! (While he enjoys typing, he never hits the keys that need to be hit, resulting in absolutely nothing being accomplished....)

We spent the morning shopping at Target. When we got back, Alex got to walk around on the sidewalk & driveway out front. It's a nice day, so we're planning a walk to the park after his nap.

Back to his birthday cake: He didn't know what to think of the candles. He studied the cake briefly, reached for it, and promptly flipped it over. He then proceeded to investigate the bits of frosting stuck to the plate but ultimately decided he didn't really like it. Aunt Mindy tried to help him out, and Mommy demonstrated with an imaginary piece of cake, but he just didn't want it! Cheerios, on the other hand, were exactly what he wanted. We gave him a cupcake, but he just picked around it.

He took a walk afterwards (with some help).

First Birthday (Part II)

Alex is now officially one year old, or in his second year, if you prefer! He started his birthday playing the keyboard in the living room (now with real speakers!).

We took a balloon and some treats (cinnamon graham cracker animals) in to day care Friday before picking him up early for the trip to Iowa.

He had an exciting weekend -- Granny fed him, Grandpa fed him, Mommy fed herself (look closely!), Aunt Mindy took him for a walk/dance around the kitchen and Great-Aunt Mary Kay read him a book.

He received a whole pile of presents, starting with an Elmo chair and a large box that turned out to be a multi-story parking garage/ramp/elevator. Aunts Kendra and Mindy were all dressed for the occasion.

Granny baked an angelfood cake in the shape of the number one. Alex picked it up, but wasn't the least bit interested in eating it. More pictures of that tomorrow!

First Birthday

We're off to Muscatine for the weekend, as Alex celebrates his first birthday. We picked him up from day care around noon, after giving him a birthday balloon to play with. Unsurprisingly, he was more interested in the stick than the balloon itself. I'll post pictures as soon as I get a chance.

Earlier this week, Alex finally found a way to tell us he would prefer cooler water in his baths. He did this by turning down the water heater! One more thing we'll need to keep him away from....

Development Updates

Assorted Alex trivia:

Two weeks ago, his four top front teeth came in (all within a day or two of each other). He now has four on top & two on the bottom.

About a week ago, he still weighed about 22 pounds.

He can now crawl about as fast as I can!

He enjoys climbing dresser drawers but hates it when he closes one on his fingers.

He's broken one child-proof lock: the long plastic "U"-shaped device that holds two cabinet doors together. He grabbed one of the long ends and pulled/twisted until it broke off. Took him a couple days to do this. True, he didn't get the cabinet open, but he did end up with a sharp piece of plastic.

He has no interest in stuffed animals, but has identified favorite books. When we put them all in a stack, he'll dig through them all to find his favorites (and then chew on them!).

He's almost walking -- he can stand on his own for a few seconds at a time, or indefinitely with minimal support (barely touching a couch or leg). When we hold his hands, he'll lean forward and walk all over the house. Not wearing shoes yet -- indoors is clean, and outdoors is too cold!

He's crawling in and out of his tent (full of small plastic balls) and will occasionally pull one out and push it around the room. I've also seen him put a few of his toys into the tent -- perhaps he'll learn to clean up on his own soon?

He's also climbing up and down the steps. Up is just like you'd expect; down is exactly the same motion in reverse (on his belly, feet first -- almost sliding down, like a seal). He's really doing well and very, very rarely does anything that would cause a fall. (Of course we're always right below him!)

Saturday, January 24, 2009

Bathing, etc.

Before bed each night, he gets a bath. This process includes checking for monsters hiding behind the shower curtain, filling the tub, and then throwing the rubber ducky and soap into the water. After his bottle, he likes to check for monsters under the bed, too. No, I don't know what these monsters look like or who told him about them, but he sure enjoys looking.

Every now and then, we test his blink reflex (Michele, did you take these?) -- he's doing just fine, as you can see!

He's also learned to push the dining room chairs around, moving from one to the next on his journey around the room.

Alex Out In the Snow

Two weeks ago, Alex got bundled up and went outside to play in the snow. He absolutely hated the snow suit, screaming while I put on my coat (possibly because he couldn't roll over!), but seems to enjoy watching Moe, the neighbor's dog. Michele had fun digging her car out from under the snow. And Alex finally got to enjoy his sled, although his face was frozen in this expression the entire time.

Late Pictures

Yeah, it's been nearly a month. We were busy, and Alex has learned to demand attention (or he'll scream, dump a trash can, or climb the stairs on his own - none of which we want him doing!). On the positive side of things, that means we have lots of pictures.

To finish out 2008, we've got Alex learning to ride the bean bag and telling Grandpa Jim how much fun it was. Alex was a real party animal New Year's Eve. A few pictures that didn't get posted earlier: Alex posing by the fireplace, running over his toys, trying to squeeze a large cup into his mouth, mid-yawn, reaching for a drink, smiling in his high chair and investigating his first Christmas present.
